8  Qualities of
Biblical Fatherhood

John 1:12

12 Yet to all who did receive him,

to those who believed in his name,

he gave the right to become children of God—

13 children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God.

‘What comes into our minds

when we think about God

is the most important thing about us.’

-A.W. Tozer

  1. Have a heart for their children

Malachi 4:6

"He will turn the hearts of the fathers to their children, and the hearts of the children to their fathers.“

Luke 1:17

…and he will go before him in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the fathers to their children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just, to make ready for the Lord a people prepared.

  1. Provide for and are generous to their children

Matthew 6:26

Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they?

Luke 11:13

If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts

to your children,

how much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!”

  1. Rejoice in their children with verbal and physical affection

2 Peter 1:17 (Referring to the Mount of Transfiguration)

17 He (Christ) received honor and glory from God the Father when the voice came to him from the Majestic Glory, saying, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.”

Luke 15:20 (Parable of the Prodigal Son)

"But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion for him; he ran to his son, threw his arms around him and kissed him.“

Proverbs 23:24

"The father of a righteous child has great joy;

a man who fathers a wise son rejoices in him."

  1. Carry their children

Deuteronomy 1:31

30 The Lord your God, who is going before you,

will fight for you, as he did for you in Egypt,

before your very eyes, 31 and in the wilderness.

There you saw how the Lord your God carried you, as a father carries his son, all the way you went until you reached this place.

  1. Instruct their children

Ephesians 6:4

"Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.“

Proverbs 1:8-9

Listen, my son, to your father’s instruction
    and do not forsake your mother’s teaching.
They are a garland to grace your head
    and a chain to adorn your neck.

  1. Discipline their children

Ephesians 6:4

"Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.“

2 Samuel 7:14-15

"I (God) will be a father to him (David’s offspring), and he'll be a son to me. When he does wrong, I'll discipline him in the usual ways, the pitfalls and obstacles of this mortal life. But I'll never remove my gracious love from him."

  1. Exhort and Encourage their children

1 Thessalonians 2:11-12

11 For you know how, like a father with his children, 12 we exhorted each one of you and encouraged you and charged you to walk in a manner worthy of God, who calls you into his own kingdom and glory.

  1. Is gracious and compassionate towards their children

Psalm 103:13

"As a father has compassion on his children, so the Lord has compassion on those who fear him."

-God the Father towards us-

  1. Have a heart for their children

Romans 5:8

But God demonstrates his own love for us in this:

While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

Ephesians 1:5 (NASB)

He predestined us to adoption as sons [and daughters] through Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the good pleasure of His will…

  1. Provide for and are generous to their children

2 Peter 1:3

His divine power has given us everything we need for a godly life through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness.

1 Peter 1:3-5

Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade. This inheritance is kept in heaven for you, who through faith are shielded by God’s power until the coming of the salvation that is ready to be revealed in the last time.

  1. Rejoice in their children with verbal and physical affection

Zephaniah 3:17

17 The Lord your God is with you,
    the Mighty Warrior who saves.
He will take great delight in you;
    in his love he will no longer rebuke you,
    but will rejoice over you with singing.”

Psalm 18:19

He brought me out into a broad place;

he rescued me, because he delighted in me.

Psalm 147:11

But the LORD takes pleasure in those who fear him, in those who hope in his steadfast love.

  1. Carry their children

Isaiah 46:4

even to your old age I am he,
    and to gray hairs I will carry you.
I have made, and I will bear;
    I will carry and will save.

Isaiah 41:10

10 fear not, for I am with you;
    be not dismayed, for I am your God;
I will strengthen you, I will help you,
    I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.

  1. Instruct their children

John 14:26

26 But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.

  1. Discipline their children

Hebrews 12:7

"Endure hardship as discipline; God is treating you as sons. For what son is not disciplined by his father?"

  1. Exhort and Encourage their children

John 16:33

"In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart;

I have overcome the world.“

Isaiah 41:13

"For I, the LORD your God, hold your right hand; it is I who say to you, 'Fear not, I am the one who helps you.’”

Psalm 94:18–19

When I thought, "My foot slips," Your steadfast love, O LORD, helped me up. When the cares of my heart are many, Your consolations cheer my soul.

  1. Are gracious and compassionate towards their children

Psalm 103:8-10

The Lord is compassionate and gracious,
    slow to anger, abounding in love.
He will not always accuse,
    nor will he harbor his anger forever;
10 he does not treat us as our sins deserve
    or repay us according to our iniquities.
