As God would have it, we find ourselves in a passage of Scripture this week (Romans 13:1-7) that could not be more timely to the challenges the church in America and around the world is facing:  how to relate to ever-changing governmental edicts coming as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic.  While this particular situation is new to our world, the challenge of how God’s people and the church are to relate to government and government to the church is not new to the people of God.

Facing new governmental orders in the face of growing cases of the delta-variant of Covid-19, how should the church respond to everything from renewed mask mandates to potential prohibitions on gatherings of various sizes?  Does God’s word have anything to say about vaccine mandates or social distancing?  How do we engage in biblical submission to government, guard against rebellious pride and yet be faithful to God when government makes demands on us that are clearly contra-biblical.  These and other questions are the real nuts and bolts of things God’s people must understand through the lens of God’s word.
